Winter Storms Also Affecting Gwinnett Schools’ Graduations

With another 2014 class day lost to weather on Feb. 11, Gwinnett County Public Schools also will have to contend with dates for graduation ceremonies later this year.

The state’s largest school system cancelled classes for Tuesday due to the threat of severe weather, according to its Facebook page. That makes four class days lost to weather issues in 2014. The three previous missed days will be made up on Feb. 17, March 14, and May 22.

And the current weather situation still poses the threat of more missed class days. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Gwinnett County through Thursday morning (Feb. 13). That warning says in part:

ON WEDNESDAY…ICE WILL BEGIN TO ACCUMULATE ON ROADS MAKING FOR HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE DRIVING CONDITIONS. ICE THAT ACCUMULATES ON TREES AND POWERLINES COULD BRING DOWN LARGE TREE LIMBS AND CAUSE POWER OUTAGES.

Previously, some schools in Suwanee had gotten tentative graduation dates for 2014, but with the caveat that firm dates would be established after March 15. Now, it seems likely that graduation ceremonies will be held during or even after Memorial Day weekend.
